Flooding at Make.Shift

Storm Recap

As some of you know, our Saturday night live show was cut short when the flash flood hit Flora Street. The downstairs venue as well as our in-house radio station, KZAX, lost power and went off the air.

Staff, volunteers, tenants, musicians, and show attendees worked together to evacuate the space, started to sand bag the basement door, and make sure all the instruments and sound gear was moved away from the flooded area.

Sunday morning, the community came together again for a work party to clean and repair the damaged space. We cannot be more thankful for all the donations and help we have received throughout the weekends critical hours.

After clearing and cleaning the space dehumidifiers graciously loaned to us by the Max Higbee Center and Alex Parrish, host of The Greatest Music of Man and Womankind on KZAX were left on along with many fans donated by community members and within 24 hours the space is on its way back to health. We could not have survived this storm without the help of our in house team as well as the community, please see a detailed thank you at the bottom of the post.

History of Flooding

For many, this storm was the first they heard of flooding at Make.Shift but for long time Make Shift community members flooding is nothing new. Typically every winter, when there is heavy downpour, our basement is at risk of flooding. Make.Shift does relies on donations, sponsorships, tenant rent and event income to maintain the space and our programming. Currently, we are not adequately equipped to deal with damage flooding may cause in the future when this happens again. This is where we lean on the community for a bit of extra help.

How you can help

We’re asking for the community's on-going support to help us upgrade & maintain our building in preparation for Autumn and Winter weather. Consistent help is extremely valuable and there many ways you can make a positive impact:

  • Give monthly as a patron of KZAX 94.9

  • Choose Make Shift & shop on amazon through Amazon Smile

  • Donate to our GoFundMe for a new accessibility ramp

  • Participate in this months art show, This Little Piggy, by putting money in your favorite pig!

  • Sign up to be a Make.Shift volunteer. We utilize volunteers in every aspect of our programming. Volunteering is a great way to get familiar with the work that Make.Shift does and build connections within the music and art community.

  • Donate directly through our website

Thank You

As a nonprofit, Make.Shift would not survive without the continued support of our music and art community. Over this past weekend, several people stepped it up and helped us protect the space. This includes staff members, tenants, KZAX DJs, Gallery Attendants, interns, make shift volunteers, musicians and more.

Thank you to Akrasia, The Brankas, On drugs and Jerry Core for being so understanding and rolling with the punches. Thank you to Alyssa & Kari and everyone else at the Max Higbee Center for lending fans and a dehumidifier. Thank you to The Lettered Streets Neighborhood Association for donating ice cream that allowed us to show some appreciation to our volunteer clean up crew.
