Art from the Archive
Make.Shift Gallery and Whatcom Art Museum are joining forces for a juried exhibit this September called “Making History: Art from the Archive.” We invite YOU to submit original works incorporating or inspired by images from the Whatcom Museum Photo Archives.
Are you fascinated with Bellingham’s seedy history at the turn of the century? Ever wondered what your house looked like 100 years ago? Then this is the art show for you!
Saturday, August 19th from 12-5pm
(deliver works to Make.Shift Gallery, 306 Flora Street)
How it Works:
1. You, the artist, select an historical image from the Whatcom Museum Photo Archives.
You can access the archive’s full collection of images in-person at the Syre Education Center, 201 Prospect Street, Wed through Fri from 1:00 to 4:30pmOR you can view more than 1,000 selected images online here. Copies of photographs are available from the archives for only 25 cents. Professional prints are available as well, prices vary depending on size.
2. Create an original artwork that incorporates or draws inspiration from your selected image.
2-D, 3-D, and Media-based will be considered. 2-D works must follow Make.Shift Gallery’s hanging requirements and standards of quality.
3. Deliver your finished piece to Make.Shift Gallery at 306 Flora St.on Saturday, August 19th between 12pm and 5pm.
When submitting your work, you must include a copy of your chosen archival image on an 8x10 piece of standard printer paper. This photograph will be displayed alongside your work in the gallery.
Pieces will be selected by a jury of professional artists, Make.Shift Gallery committee members, and community members selected by the Whatcom Museum. Works will be selected according to originality, innovation, and adherence to the theme.
The show will be on display at Make.Shift Gallery.
